Caring for your fur

  • Your fur is an extremely durable piece of your wardrobe, but you must treat it with love and attention. This way, it will last for decades.
  • Furs like to be kept cool and should not be exposed to heat. We have the proper equipment for our furs to be stored at the perfect temperature and humidity, rest assured your fur has been properly kept.
  • Furs must have space to breathe, your fur will arrive in a special furrier garment bag for storage on trips. Air circulation prevents your furs leather side from drying out.
  • Never pin jewelry to your fur, and avoid sharp necklaces. We also suggest spinning your diamond or high set rings around prior to putting your fur on, as this will avoid snagging the lining. We suggest wearing a scarf around the neck if you are going to be wearing jeweled necklaces, to prevent matting or picking.
  • Consider a clutch bag while wearing your fur. Most designer furs have secret inside compartments designed to store your valuables. A clutch bag will prevent matting on the shoulders or arms of the coat, another reason shoulder bags are taboo.
  • Furs do not do well with friction or crushing. If you are planning to bring your fur with you on a long road trip, consider placing your fur over you like a blanket. If you sit on your fur for short periods of time, remember to shake out any spots when you exit your vehicle.
  • Furs do not like chemicals. Do not use any chemical around your fur. While most of us love perfume, spray it on your body not your fur. Avoid mothproofing or insecticides. Always remember, to protect the sheen of your fur, use your hairspray prior to putting on your fur. Many of these chemicals have alcohol in them, which can dry pelts out faster. Cedar lined closets or chests are not recommended as the smell they send out may stay in the coat and the oils in the leather may become rancid and begin to smell.
  • We suggest placing your fur with your local furrier for professional storage. This is important, and generally is not expensive to do. Your fur will be cleaned, brushed and glazed. All furs love to vacation with your local furrier. Your fur will be returned to you full of luster with a renewed resilience and ready for another season. If you do not have a relationship with a furrier we have one that we highly recommend, contact us for information.
  • If your fur becomes dampened with light snow or rain, gently stroke with the nap using a soft cloth, then hang it over the shaped furrier hanger, that we provide, and allow to dry. Do not be tempted to dry with a hair dryer or over a radiator. Once dry, shake your coat vigorously, then smooth with your hand. If your fur is soaked through, you must take it to a furrier and have the coat professionally cared for.
